STP- overnight space still available!

We’ve still got plenty of RV space and a couple of semi-private rooms are still available to rent for STP weekend on our campus. This year the events on campus during STP will be bigger and better than ever. The beer garden is back with local talented musicians performing near by, lots of yummy food vendors as well as the CC cafeteria open for dinner and breakfast! AND…tent camping is FREE with no reservations required!

The STP midpoint celebration will be held at Centralia College again this year. We’ve still got plenty of RV spaces left, FREE tent camping, indoor camping in the gym and a couple of semi-private indoor rooms for rent. Check out all the info on our STP website.

Tree planting event details

Looking for a ride to the tree planting, which takes place on Saturday, Feb. 12, beginning at 10 a.m.? The good news is that the college will take you to the site. Meet in the van parking lot behind the Technology Bldg. Be sure to dress for the weather (look out the window) but boots of some kind would be essential as would a shovel and gloves.

If you want to get there under your own steam: Southbound I-5, take Exit 74, turn left onto Maurin Rd., go 1.2 miles then turn right onto Rush Rd., go about one-half mile to the tree-planting site.

It should be one of those feel-good things, knowing you’re doing something for the environment. If for no other reason, come along for the hot chocolate and the chance to learn how to plant a Western Red Cedar.

Tree planting event set for Feb. 12

Volunteers Wanted: The Centralia College Sustainability Committee has set Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. until about noon, as the tree planting event day. The committee says it has the trees and the means of transporting volunteer planters to the site, and will give a short lesson or two on how to plant. This will be a test run to see how many people are willing to be a part of this kind of activity. Stay tuned if you want to help save the planet. I hear there will be hot chocolate. If we can plant 360 trees we can keep the college’s presses running for another year.

Smart Grid is cutting edge

Those of you who listened to/watched the State of the Union speech heard President Obama say the government would invest more in energy technology. Well folks, Centralia College is already there with cutting edge stuff. Everyone knows the infrastructure is old and the people who run it are probably older. So something’s gotta change. There’s something called Smart Grid that is coming that uses new technology, whatever that is, to get electricity more efficiently from a source to the end user. Centralia College is putting together the training programs for the Smart Grid. Go Blazers!

Tree planting adventure coming

Rumor has it that the college will head out on a tree planting adventure on one of three possible dates, all coming up in February: 1) February 12, 2) February 5, and 3) February 26. Not sure who makes the decision, probably Lisa Carlson who heads the Sustainability Committee, or what factors drive the decision. At any rate, the college has the trees and the land available for the planting. If you want to be a part of a sustainability activity, stay tuned. You could tell your grandkids that you did something to help save the planet.

3 million and counting

The good news is that the college’s print shop is reducing the number of impressions it makes. The bad news is that copiers across campus are producing increasing numbers of copies. Three million copies made in the last year. For those who indulge in such things, that’s about 520 miles of paper sheets or about 1200 sheets of paper for each full-time student. According to the formula developed by a graduate student at the University of Maine , Centralia College uses about 360 trees, just for the standard white 20-lb. bond paper. Compared to the good old days, when few people cared about trees, that probably isn’t too bad.

Unless you’re a tree.

El Nino coming?

The La Nina climate event, widely seen as a factor causing floods in Australia that have killed at least 19 people, is a natural cooling of the Pacific that mirrors El Nino. Nasty. Next year comes a predicted El Nino, which is a warming of Pacific Ocean and with it the opportunity to sell your snow tires and buy a boat to prepare for the floods. Next year is predicted by some to post the warmest year-round temperatures in recorded history. But that only goes back about 200 years.

It will also rekindle the rhetoric surrounding climate change. I suspect that will continue until we all burn up for freeze to death.

No tree planting on MLK

It looks like Martin Luther King day won’t work for the college’s tree planting project. Sources close to the root of the issue say the next best alternative will be to choose a Saturday, either late Jan. or early Feb. The planting could take place in March but after that the baby trees will have a lower survival rate. Not enough moisture. In Western Washington?
