Sixteen Centralia College athletes were among the volunteers collecting food for Lewis County food banks at the annual Walk-N-Knock on Dec. 3. This is the second year the athletes have participated in the event, which collects about 20,000 pounds of food and more than $4,000 in cash donations.
The bulk of the athletes were from the Centralia College softball team, though there were also representatives from the golf, men’s basketball, and volleyball teams.
“As a program, we really stress character education and service,” explained Athletic Director Bob Peters. “All of our athletes are taught to value volunteerism and kindness to the community. The Walk-N-Knock is just one of several service projects our athletes have committed to this year.”
Other projects include the Blazer Buddies reading program at Fords Prairie Elementary School and in the campus childcare program. Volleyball and men’s basketball players have been reading to the children since the beginning of the year. In addition, the Athletic Program is currently collecting $1 donations to buy holiday blankets for children.
To donate, contact the Centralia College Athletics Office at 360-736-9391, ext. 345, or stop by the Michael Smith Gymnasium, room 119, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
