47 businesses participate in Rotary/TRiO Mentorship Day

The TRiO program at Centralia College hosted the Rotary/TRiO Mentorship Day on Feb. 7.  This half-day event provided nearly 100 high school students with a job shadow experience relevant to their career interests.  Forty-seven businesses participated in this important career exploration opportunity.

“Job shadowing enables students to observe a work place mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job, providing an up-close look at the importance and the relevance of their education and see firsthand the range of knowledge, skills and teamwork that the workplace demands,” explained Kathleen Vodjansky-Ward, assistant director of the TRiO programs. “This type of experience enhances a student’s ability to make informed decisions about career choices.”

Rotary/TRiO Mentorship Day started more than 20 years ago with W.F. West students being placed with Chehalis Rotary members. The event has grown to include students from all area high schools and mentors from the Twin  Cities and Centralia Rotary clubs as well as many non-Rotarians.

In April, TRiO is coordinating with Providence Centralia Hospital for a Medical Mentorship event.
